The four levels of AI use: where are you?

Most businesses cannot say whether they are using AI well, only that they are using it. Five questions, and you get the level you are actually at plus the single next step - which is usually smaller than people expect.

How is AI used in your business today?
Does it know anything about your business?
Is it connected to your systems?
Does anything happen without a person starting it?
If AI stopped working tomorrow, what would happen?

The four levels

  1. A search engine you ask. Questions in, answers copied back out by hand.
  2. Customised with your information. It knows your documents, your tone and your rules.
  3. Connected to the tools you run. It reads live data instead of a pasted copy.
  4. Running as part of operations. Work happens on a schedule and people review it.

You are at the highest level your answers genuinely support, not an average of them. One connected system puts you at level three even if most of the team is still pasting.
